Sleep aids, treatments or behavioral changes to treat Insomnia?

Insomnia is a problem which can happen at any age. It is important to check out the various treatment alternatives and find out the best one.
Insomnia is caused due to various reasons ranging from depression to excess alcohol intake. In little children it can be bedwetting or a pain in the stomach. Therefore the treatment of insomnia should also be different for various causes. It is always a better idea to treat the symptoms behaviorally than to start with a medical treatment.
Sleep aids for insomnia can be the second option. Prescription sleep aids should be the last option and only taken when the root cause of the symptom has been found out. Behavioral approaches can show significant results if done with a strong will. Limiting the time spent in bed and developing the mental connect between the bed and sleep can eradicate the root cause of insomnia. Developing this mental connect is known as stimulus control. It is one of the best approaches to root out insomnia sleep disorder.
Sleeping aids can be tried out if all these approaches fail. There are different aids available in the market like contoured bed pillow or eye shades which can help to get sleep quickly. Herbal products and dietary supplements can also be to treat insomnia. If all these efforts fail to get the desired results then medical treatments is a wise idea. However, most sleep specialists think that sleep aids should not be considered as a long-term solution to insomnia. Behavioral changes always remain the first option.
